IS CANON AWARE OF IRIS ISSUE OR NOT?

We have reported the iris issue/malfunction found on firmware 2.0.4 to Canon, like many other users have already too.

The “Iris jitter” is VERY easy to reproduce, as we explained with full details in our Updated Report and also the Original Report.

We included more than one video showing the problem, also proving that is NOT limited to “Macro” lenses.

Aren’t all those tests, details and videos enough for a serious investigation?

There is no chance for an inconvenience to find that wrong behavior if the tech support do that simple test.

But Canon seems to be not fully aware of this issue. At least that is what many responses given by email are telling to their customers.

Below are quoted responses received from Canon (we keep names private):

From Canon USA:

“Canon has not found any issues with firmware version 2.0.4. The information you found online is not from a Canon website, and we cannot guarantee its accuracy. If we do find any issues we will release a service notice or firmware update to resolve them.

From Canon Europe:

“Dear Sir/Madam,

Be advised that Canon Europe have not issued such a release regarding “Iris Jitter” thus far and as such I cannot give you an estimated release date for a quality issue that has not yet been publicised by Canon Europe. If such a statement is made in due course by Canon Europe, it will be published via the FAQ section of the Canon Europe website.

CONCLUSION: it seems there is some lack of communication between different Canon departments/regions.

We do not want nor expect Canon to make any kind of public official statement, but we think the responses given to customers who contact Canon Tech Support should be consistent and NOT contradictory.

REPORT TO CANON

We encourage all users to report this issue to Canon.  Please check the Canon contact information included on the sticky post at the Home Page.

Feel free to include a link to this blog or our detailed reports. There is no chance for any inconvenience to reproduce the issue.

Please also read the small report below about light metering inaccuracy, it should be reported too.

LIGHT METERING INACCURACY

Additionally we encourage all 5D Mark II users to do this simple test:

– Place your camera on a tripod, aiming to a fixed scene with constant illumination.
– Turn it ON and put it in M mode and turn Live View mode ON (set it to “Stills+Movie – Movie Display“, do not skip this important detail).
– Start changing the Aperture value in 1/3 step using the rear wheel, and check the metering bar displayed on the LCD monitor.
– You will notice that sometimes the metering bar does not change when you change the Aperture (even when the scene brightness does change) OR it changes in 2/3 steps instead.
– This inconsistency or inaccuracy doesn’t happen always, but very often. And it occurs with ALL lenses. Just “play” a bit with the Aperture value and you will notice it.

CONCLUSION: Light metering inaccuracy whilst in Live View mode (Stills+Movie-Movie Display). We fully confirmed it in M mode with all lenses, but probably occurs on Av, Tv and P modes as well.

Report it to Canon too. The more customers reporting, the more chances to get it fixed.

ADDITIONAL FEEDBACKS

We received a feedback telling the latest firmware release for Canon 7D also suffers from the same iris jitter problem when using the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro lens. We still have to confirm it (if you do a video test, feel free to contact us).

In few days we will publish a “List of lenses affected and not affected” by the iris jitter when mounted on the 5D Mark II with firmware 2.0.4. Stay tuned.

Feel free to post a comment or contact us if you find the iris jitter issue on a different lens and/or camera (in that case please be as detailed as possible).

Users of Canon 7D, 1D Mark IV and other models are of course also welcome!

RESPONSE GIVEN BY CANON

Canon has been contacted by many customers in the last two weeks.

One member of the Canon community received an answer from Canon Tech support after the report he/she sent regarding the issue/malfunction found in Firmware 2.0.4 (for full details of the problem please read the original Report here and the Update here).

Below is quoted part of the answer given by Canon (we keep privacy of the sender):

COMMENTS

We encourage Canon users who have EOS 5D Mark II and the 100mm 2.8 Macro lens or any other lens experiencing the explained malfunction to report it to Canon (contact information can be found here).

Please note that this is a Firmware issue, not a lens issue.

Not all reports sent to Canon were responded, but we sincerely hope Canon fix this issue in near future (especially since it’s not limited to “Macro” lenses) and also add some additional “very possible” functions to the next update.
