IS CANON AWARE OF IRIS ISSUE OR NOT?

We have reported the iris issue/malfunction found on firmware 2.0.4 to Canon, like many other users have already too.

The “Iris jitter” is VERY easy to reproduce, as we explained with full details in our Updated Report and also the Original Report.

We included more than one video showing the problem, also proving that is NOT limited to “Macro” lenses.

Aren’t all those tests, details and videos enough for a serious investigation?

There is no chance for an inconvenience to find that wrong behavior if the tech support do that simple test.

But Canon seems to be not fully aware of this issue. At least that is what many responses given by email are telling to their customers.

Below are quoted responses received from Canon (we keep names private):

“Canon has not found any issues with firmware version 2.0.4. The information you found online is not from a Canon website, and we cannot guarantee its accuracy. If we do find any issues we will release a service notice or firmware update to resolve them.

CONCLUSION: it seems there is some lack of communication between different Canon departments/regions.

We do not want nor expect Canon to make any kind of public official statement, but we think the responses given to customers who contact Canon Tech Support should be consistent and NOT contradictory.

LIGHT METERING INACCURACY

Additionally we encourage all 5D Mark II users to do this simple test:

– Place your camera on a tripod, aiming to a fixed scene with constant illumination.
– Turn it ON and put it in M mode and turn Live View mode ON (set it to “Stills+Movie – Movie Display“, do not skip this important detail).
– Start changing the Aperture value in 1/3 step using the rear wheel, and check the metering bar displayed on the LCD monitor.
– You will notice that sometimes the metering bar does not change when you change the Aperture (even when the scene brightness does change) OR it changes in 2/3 steps instead.
– This inconsistency or inaccuracy doesn’t happen always, but very often. And it occurs with ALL lenses. Just “play” a bit with the Aperture value and you will notice it.

CONCLUSION: Light metering inaccuracy whilst in Live View mode (Stills+Movie-Movie Display). We fully confirmed it in M mode with all lenses, but probably occurs on Av, Tv and P modes as well.

Report it to Canon too. The more customers reporting, the more chances to get it fixed.

ADDITIONAL FEEDBACKS

We received a feedback telling the latest firmware release for Canon 7D also suffers from the same iris jitter problem when using the Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro lens. We still have to confirm it (if you do a video test, feel free to contact us).

In few days we will publish a “List of lenses affected and not affected” by the iris jitter when mounted on the 5D Mark II with firmware 2.0.4. Stay tuned.

Feel free to post a comment or contact us if you find the iris jitter issue on a different lens and/or camera (in that case please be as detailed as possible).

Canon has been contacted by many customers in the last two weeks.

One member of the Canon community received an answer from Canon Tech support after the report he/she sent regarding the issue/malfunction found in Firmware 2.0.4 (for full details of the problem please read the original Report here and the Update here).

Below is quoted part of the answer given by Canon (we keep privacy of the sender):

COMMENTS

We encourage Canon users who have EOS 5D Mark II and the 100mm 2.8 Macro lens or any other lens experiencing the explained malfunction to report it to Canon (contact information can be found here).

Please note that this is a Firmware issue, not a lens issue.

Not all reports sent to Canon were responded, but we sincerely hope Canon fix this issue in near future (especially since it’s not limited to “Macro” lenses) and also add some additional “very possible” functions to the next update.

Malfunction in Firmware 2.0.4 UPDATE

INTRODUCTION

We have been receiving additional reports from other users regarding the malfunction we found on Firmware 2.0.4: the “IRIS jitter”

Not all lenses are affected. This phenomenon occurs much more often with Macro lenses, but it is NOT limited to Macro lenses.

Please note that this is a firmware issue, not a lens issue.

How to reproduce the issue

As we explained in the previous report, it is very easy:

Set camera to M mode, Live View to “Stills+Movie – Movie Display“, which is the correct mode to get “full manual control” on movie mode. Then turn ON Live View mode and rotate the focus ring, and you will notice the iris jitter watching it directly or watching the image on the camera’s LCD, also hearing the noise of the iris.

Remember the camera is now in “full manual mode” for movie/video mode, so the iris should not change “at all” unless the user intentionally does change it.

Clarification of the issue: It is not the iris/diaphragm is closing or opening a step and remaining there. It is a jitter: a fast open/close or close/open movement of the IRIS, mostly depending on the direction the focus ring is being rotated. It usually occurs in small values (1/3 f-stops), with the consequence that the image is also suffering that “jitter” when recording a video clip (or even when not recording), making the footage unusable.

Important note: the IRIS jitter is NOT related to the amount of light being gathered by the sensor, nor being metered by the camera, because the same issue occurs in a dark room or with the lens cap on.

VIDEO TESTS

Thanks to the users who made their video tests and sent the links to us.

▪ With a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens:
Image jitter can be seen on the camera’s LCD monitor lot of times
It’s also recorded on the footage, making it unusable. It is much easier to see whilst testing or recording than in this video test. The most evident ones at 0:48, 0:57, 1:01, 1:03:

▪ With a Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM lens:

▪ With a Sigma 150mm f/2.8 Apo Macro:

▪ With a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM in a dark room:

For obvious reasons we can’t post a video showing the issue, but those users who own this lens can do the test in complete darkness, following the instructions, and then hear the iris jitter lot of times.

Note: this test can also be done with the lens cap on with the same results.

ADDITIONAL FEEDBACKS

Some feedbacks from readers regarding this issue with other lenses:

Canon 300mm 2.8L IS USM:

“Canon 300 2.8 IS + 1.4x TC – does it pretty much every time you cycle focusing from around 20m to infinity position
Canon 300 2.8 IS – does it at times, a bit randomly, not every time, seems to occur a bit more toward the near focus end”

Tamron SP Di  90mm 1:2.8 Macro:

“Firmware 2.0.4 iris jitter malfunction on Canon 5D Mark II tested also with the following lens in FULL manual mode (iris jitter appears nearly EVERY time when rotating the focusring, so it is totally unusable):

Tamron SP Di  90mm 1:2.8 Macro”

CONSIDERATIONS

We are only reporting a malfunction with the sincere hope it will be fixed at some point.

We do understand the HUGE efforts made by Canon engineers with the latest firmware update, and we are really grateful for that.

This is a great chance for Canon, not only to fix this issue, but also to add some of the features improvements hugely requested by thousands of 5D Mark II users around the world. We have already mentioned them in our previous report (click here).

We love this extraordinary camera and we want the best for it, that’s why we put very big efforts on everything related to the 5D Mark II, because we know its huge potential.

We are confident this issue will be fixed and possibly some features added too on a new update, for the benefit of all Canon users.

We sincerely thank Canon for listening to customers and being steps ahead far of competition.

Malfunction in Firmware 2.0.4

MALFUNCTION IN 2.0.4 – IRIS issue

Firmware 2.0.4 is really a GREAT update, an extraordinary effort made by Canon engineers. But after some deep tests we have found and confirmed a bug/malfunction in this firmware.

▪ Description of the problem:

When a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens is mounted on the camera and the user manually changes focus (rotates focus ring), the lens suffer from an “IRIS jitter”, even when the camera is in full manual mode.

It is not normal, and should not happen. The tests were made by several users with many copies on many camera bodies, so it’s not an isolated lens problem.

This malfunction always occurs in this situation:

When the camera is set to M (Manual) mode and in Live View mode (set to Still+Movie – Movie Display), which is the correct mode for “full manual control” in movie mode.

Additional details:

. It does NOT happen with Firmware version 1.1.0
. It happens WHEN recording video and also when NOT recording video
. It happens with ISO and every possible automatic setting fixed to a value, or turned off
. It happens in C1/C2/C3 too (if they are registered as “M” modes for movie recording)
. It happens in PAL and NTSC modes
. It happens in  both lens modes: MF and AF mode
. The camera does NOT tell any change in aperture setting (it keeps showing the same value) nor give any kind of advice either
. The iris shifting can be heard (and seen)
. The brightness shifting of the image is visible on the camera’s LCD monitor when the iris/aperture shift occurs
. The iris/aperture usually changes in small values, but enough to make a footage unusable, so using this great lens for movie/video purpose may result impossible

VIDEO TESTS

These two videos clearly show the problem when the Canon EF 100mm F/2.8 Macro USM is mounted on the 5D Mark II in the full manual mode for movie mode, and the focus ring is rotated from macro to infinity and vice versa. Remember that this does not happen with firmware 1.1.0.

Iris “jitter” when changing focus:

It’s also recorded on the footage, making it unusable. It is much easier to see whilst testing or recording than in this video test. The most evident ones at 0:48, 0:57, 1:01, 1:03:

TEST UPDATE

We made another simple test to prove this issue is not related to the light entering the lens/sensor/camera: If you reproduce the test, with everything set to Manual as described but in a dark room, the same issue occurs (you can hear the iris jitter when changing focus).

Conclusion: the IRIS jitter is not related to light metering or any kind of “compensation” being done by the camera due the different amount of light entering the lens when focusing, nor any other light/sensor related matter.

Since the test is done in complete darkness we cannot post a video to show it, but every user can reproduce and verify it by their own with ease.

ADDITIONAL REPORTS – UPDATED

We received some additional reports from many users.

Some of them:

– Regarding the malfunction of the Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro USM:

“By observing the IRIS as I adjusted the aperture I noticed that sometimes it doesn’t go correctly to the right size. I even noticed that sometimes as I stopped down the aperture for a step the IRIS would actually open a bit instead.”

– Other reports: We also received reports regarding 3rd party lenses experiencing “weird noises” coming from the iris, or iris/aperture inconsistencies when mounted on 5D Mark II with firmware 2.0.4 that weren’t present on firmware 1.1.0.

It seems very possible that these issues also occur with some 3rd party lenses and maybe other Canon lenses as well.

UPDATE:

– We received a video test from a user reporting this iris “jitter” on a Canon EF 300 F/4L IS USM

The user confirmed the camera was set to M and Live View mode to “Sills+Movie-Movie Display”, which is the correct “full manual mode” for video, where “the camera shouldn’t be moving the iris *at all* unless the user is changing it”.

This confirms that this malfunction also affects other Canon lenses when using firmware 2.0.4 on the 5D Mark II.

It might sound weird, but we wonder if this issue could be related to the supposed fix:
“Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)”.

CONSIDERATIONS

We understand that this firmware update is a VERY hard work. But maybe there weren’t given enough resources to support this extraordinary effort made by Canon engineers.

That may explain the initial undetected bug/malfunction on version 2.0.3 (that was reported just 1 day after its official release by many professionals and by this team who use 5D Mark II for serious movie/video purposes).

We use Canon gear and we love this camera. That’s why we try to do our best in the most constructive possible way to encourage Canon to give the best features and results to their customers.

We want the best from this extraordinary camera, for every user, and also the best for Canon as company for making it possible.

We request Canon to fix this problem. That’s the priority.

But we also request Canon to carefully read and consider what so many customers are asking: to include some additional functions that are really possible and even easy in many cases.

The 5D Mark II has been a huge success since its release. This could be a great opportunity for Canon to add these features and keep it as a best seller for even longer time.

SOME REQUESTS ARE:

AutoISO limiters, so much requested by photographers (like the much cheaper Canon T2i/550D)
More frames in Bracketing mode
Movie Crop function, to allow video recording at 1:1 of the central area of the sensor (at the highest possible resolution: Full HD, HD or at least in SD like the much cheaper Canon T2i/550D)
▪ “EDIT” function in playback menu, allowing to Cut and Save part of a video clip (available in most cheaper cameras)
An OPTION to display Audio meters bars in Live View mode and when recording video
An OPTION to disable the “white square” when using HDMI output, to get a “clean” video output (so easy and so requested), and keep that signal at the maximum possible resolution when recording video
More flexibility for the “Info” button in Live View mode (more display options: current Live Histogram is great but it’s only displayed with extra information, reducing the overall frame visibility)

These are hugely requested functions that CAN be implemented via firmware. They don’t require hardware changes.

EOS 5D Mark II Firmware Update Version 2.0.3

Recently we have discovered a malfunction that occurs with Firmware Version 2.0.3, in which the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed and the camera becomes unable to record audio if the power is turned off (or if Auto power off takes effect) after registering “Sound Recording: Manual” in the camera user settings.

We apologize very sincerely for the inconvenience, but we are going to stop making this firmware available for download. For customers who have already updated to the new firmware, when using the camera with the mode dial set to C1/C2/C3, please either set the sound recording settings to Auto.

We are currently preparing firmware that will correct this malfunction. As soon as those preparations have been completed, we will let you know on this Web site. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience this represents, but please wait until the fixed firmware is ready.

ADDITIONAL ISSUES

This is our remaining big concern: Are there any additional issues?

We are receiving reports that seem to indicate that possibility. Some of them:

– Weird noises coming from the lens and/or Aperture changes in M mode while not in LIveView mode, without the user doing any change. Even using different lenses.

Could it be another kind of malfunction in the connection between camera and lens? In fact it is one of the functions that was also recoded.

– Inconsistent stuttering and/or dropped frames on 24p (in some cases or cameras)

– Are black dots appearing again? One reader has posted a comment with a video test.
