5D Mark II Firmware Release Coming

According to CanonRumors the announcement was briefly on-line at Canon UK website.

We got not one but many confirmations that the release was imminent, and it was intentionally delayed, as we already posted many times before, so this date could be the “final” and “official”.

Let’s hope Canon give us the FULL featured firmware release for the 5D Mark II, which includes Standard 23.976 / 25 / 29.97 fps, 720p modes and some other additional improvements (like AGC fix, etc.).

Check CR post here:

.

DEAR CANON INC.,

We are still waiting, we do know what you have.

Please take professional care of your professional customers and give them all the features that you include even in an entry-level DSLR.

They are possible, they share almost the same hardware.

The 5D Mark II has huge potential inside and was adopted by thousands of amateurs, professionals and companies around the world thanks to its great video capabilities.

By updating it properly you will keep it “fresh” and more competitive. Not to mention customers’ loyalty who see they are listened after their big investments.

All of that will reflect in more sales, not only on the camera but also on full frame lenses.

That is a great business opportunity for an already designed and in-production model.

Make your voice Heard

A SMALL CAMPAIGN

We started this “small” but still effective campaign many weeks ago when Canon announced the EOS 550D including MANY of our requests for the 5D Mark II, but we think it would be good to make this campaign more “official” now through this post.

A fact: the Firmware for 5D Mark II is already made, waiting on the desk and even getting dusty…

It will come with some important improvements like “standard” 24/25/30 modes, and more (yes, not all what they could give, sadly that’s something we already expected), so we keep on requesting all around the world.

Let Canon know what we 5D2 customers feel and NEED (politely, but clearly):

http://www.youtube.com/comment_servlet?all_comments&v=PdDAfOi3nb0&fromurl=/watch%3Fv%3DPdDAfOi3nb0

Post your comment there. It only takes a moment (do not copy and paste other’s comment because it will be marked as spam)

We do NOT want a 5D Mark 3, but the firmware update to the existing 5D Mark 2, that CAN be made (in fact it is already) with MANY fixes and improvements to match cheaper and even entry-level DSLR’s video features (24/25/30, 720p50/60, AutoISO limit, EDIT option for video in playback mode, Crop Video, etc.)

If you check carefully our List of Fixes & Features and the Petition to Canon Inc., we are also requesting some “STILL-ONLY” features since the beginning of 2000, like AutoISO limit (recently implemented in the 550D), and even more frames for Bracketing.

AutoISO limit and Crop Video mode are in our list since LOT of months ago. Canon is taking our ideas (and we’re glad about that) but still doesn’t give them to 5D2 users (and that is not really professional)

We think that people (amateurs, professionals and even studios) who invested thousands of dollars in Canon gear deserve better and more professional attention.

Those fixes & improvements are completely possible via firmware (purely software related). They don’t need any hardware change at all.

Thanks for joining.

24p & 25p Firmware Update Announcement

Contents:

  • Official announcement
  • Just in case & release date
  • Additional thoughts
  • A new way of doing business
  • Keep on calling
  • Thanks

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

At least and at last Canon said something!

– From CANON Europe:

EOS 5D Mark II firmware planned

” (…) This scheduled firmware development for the camera is being developed as a direct result of feedback received from cinematographers and photographers. “

– From CANON Europe:

Download the full press release (PDF, 92kB)

“ Canon today announces that it is currently developing a firmware update to the EOS 5D Mark II to enable the recording of high definition 1080p video at 24 and 25fps. The decision to develop new firmware to support these features has been taken following feedback received from cinematographers and photographers.

– From FXGUIDE:

New 5DMKII & 1D News from Canon

“We understand that EOS 5D Mark II users desire additional frame rates and we’re preparing a firmware update to allow the camera to shoot at both 24P and 25P,” said Chris Macleod, Brand Manager – EOS, Canon Australia. “The upgrade to 24P and 25P will broaden the usage scope for this popular camera to include cinema and broadcast applications, respectively.”Canon expects the firmware update to be available in the first half of 2010 and will release more details as they become available.

JUST IN CASE & RELEASE DATE

Just in case it isn’t still clear enough:

  • ALL Frame Rates must be the STANDARD ones.
That means 29.97fps for “30p” and so on.

We are very happy with this announcement, BUT we don’t see a clear reason why to wait until 2010 for the firmware update, because it has been beta tested since months ago… (as mentioned here in previous posts)

Probably it is being improved, but it looks like more as a marketing strategy than a real technical reason. We hope the firmware is released sooner than later.

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

It’s a great opportunity and it would be a smart move from Canon to also fix, improve and add some other features in this firmware update, especially because this camera has a HUGE potential inside still not exploited, as Magic Lantern project has already proven. Check the Features Request List for reference.

Releasing the new firmware without fixing AGC (for instance, a VERY easy fix) would be ridiculous…

It would be great to see some of Magic Lantern features in upcoming firmware updates.

A NEW WAY OF DOING BUSINESS

Adding and improving functions via Firmware Updates on an already-designed and already in-production camera can be a new and very smart way of doing business, especially because this cameras has HUGE potential still not exploited and already known.

To keep selling a camera model for longer periods of time and to keep customers’ loyalty at the same time is extremely important in a competitive market, and will reflect in more sales on in-production cameras (meaning improved cost/profit ratio in serial production), lenses, accessories and also future camera models.

Because when customers see that a company does care about improving existing cameras, the chances for buying that brand again are MUCH higher. (See previous post for a quoted reader’s comment).

All of that has the logical consequence of long term company profit.

KEEP ON CALLING

Until an official announcement with full details, we should keep on calling Canon to register our Features request for the 5D Mark II.

And even after the release, because this camera has lot more to give (that Canon won’t implement at once) and this doesn’t end here.

Check the previous post for instructions and a Reference List. It’s VERY easy and fast. Thanks for joining us! As you can see, community efforts do bring results.

THANKS

We want to express special thanks to all those people AROUND the WORLD who did help in any and many ways to achieve this goal, even while many others said it was futile or impossible (just like the campaign for Manual Control…).

It’s because of them, acting as a Community or by their own, but aiming the same goal, that we will all have the “so requested” update.

We also thank very much some few websites (some of them linked in previous post and/or at the right side of this page). Very specially to Cinema 5D forum which has become an incredible source of information and technical help for all 5D Mark II users, with lots of creative initiatives. Magic Lantern and many other improvements and accessories were born there.

Even Canon should take a deep look at that site… (if they aren’t already…)

While many websites were reluctant to write or post anything to help this “Campaign”, which in fact was and is for the benefit of ALL users, few others supported it without hesitation. So thank you very much.

And finally, but not in last place:

Thanks to Canon for “listen to customers”. You are leading the market with innovation, and addressing those (so requested) improvements to an existing and very popular model you ensure your leadership and also your profit.

As we already told: Community actions DO bring results. Thanks to everyone supporting these campaigns.

5D Mark II Features Request

Contents:

  • Introduction
  • List of Features Requested
  • List of Additional Filmmaking features
  • The importance of Standard frame rates
  • Information & Testimonials
  • Can I help?

INTRODUCTION

This is a list of improvements that have been requested since months ago by lot (thousands) of customers around the world. Please check “I Called Canon” and previous posts to see testimonials and procedure.

Some improvements could be more difficult or hard to achieve due “possible” hardware limitations, but others are really easy for Canon.

This Campaign has reached Canon departments in the past for the Manual Control request, and now is reaching them again for improvements that are possible to this camera and VERY important for Film makers.

Most (if not all) of these features CAN be implemented via Firmware Update, and that means: no big costs to Canon at all.  “Refreshing” this camera and keeping big sales and profit on an already designed and already in-production model, keeping it more competitive (especially important when competition arrives) is a big deal, isn’t it?

Doing so would reflect in: more sales, but also more loyalty to Canon, more credibility, then more long-term profit for the company.

The more customers requesting, the more chances (check Info & Testimonial).

As someone said:

“ If Canon want to maintain customer loyalty people need to know when they purchase a Canon product they are going to be looked after. If I knew Canon would add if possible any features wanted by customers, I’d buy Canon EVERYTIME. ”

LIST OF FEATURES REQUESTED

Frame Rates as in 7D Done
29.97 / 25 / 23.976 fps: STANDARD 30/25/24p video modes.

720p mode at 29.97 fps
It will allow LONGER video recording time before reaching the 4GB file size limit.

▪ Improve AF contrast detection algorithm and/or add Focusing Aids
Magic Lantern has done a lot on this, and proven it is extremely useful, even essential. See additional Filmmaking features.

Digital Zoom Video mode
To record on video a smaller area of the sensor as “digital zoom”. Very useful.

1:1 Crop Sensor Video mode
To record a native 1920×1080 area of the sensor, which extremely minimizes “jello” effect and eliminates aliasing issues/artifacts. This is possible in a similar way how Zoom level x5 and x10 works, but recording on video what you see on screen. This function could be part of the above one.

720p mode at 59.94 and 50 fps X Removed from final release 2.0.3

File Spanning function
A new video file is automatically created when 4GB is reached without stop recording. Very important for lot of users.

“EDIT” option in playback mode (for Video mode)
This would allow Cut and Save part of recorded video clip. It is available on 7D and much cheaper P&S cameras.

Noise Pattern Bug/Issue (Stills and Video mode)
FIX. Noise pattern/banding visible on shadows at high (and not so high) ISO.

More frames in Bracketing mode
For still photography. Very easy to fix.

Auto ISO in Manual mode
For still photography, improved and with selectable limits.

REMAP” hot & stuck pixels function
This will save Canon Technical Support LOT of money and time. It is an essential feature. We still don’t understand why it wasn’t already implemented.

Full HD through HDMI output while recording

Live Histogram for video mode   Done

Remote Start/Stop video recording using cable release (if hardware possible)

Audio Manual Gain for video recording   Done
FIX. Very easy, and essential for acceptable audio recording.

LIST of additional FILMMAKING features

Hugely demanded and used (until now only via Magic Lantern)

▪ Control of focus
▪ Peaking, false-color and edge detection on LCD
▪ Focus Assistance
▪ Focus rack
▪ Focus stacking
▪ Zebra stripes (video peaking)
▪ On-screen audio meters

… and LOT more features that has already been proven to be possible (and VERY useful) by Magic Lantern Project.

They are helping thousands of users on filmmaking jobs
, and Canon could do even a better implementation of them via Firmware update. That would be another BIG BANG to keep big sales on this great camera.

Focus Assistance System / Focus Detection Area
It would tell (in LiveView mode, and in real time if possible) when a specific area of the frame is in focus or not. This feature would be very helpful and very much appreciated by filmmakers.

Magic Lantern’s New Features Request:  Check them here, you will get very good and creative ideas on new features.

  • We hope Canon consider all these features very seriously to be implemented via Firmware update, because they ARE possible and they ARE VERY IMPORTANT for Film Making jobs (Nikon could do it before indeed…)

THE IMPORTANCE OF STANDARD FRAME RATES

EDIT: This is corrected with Firmware version 2.0.3 released on March, 2010.

Until now the 5D Mark II has not even a single frame rate compatible with any other video camera made by Canon, 7D included! That’s why we request the standard 29.97 fps too.

We hope that Canon is now aware of what this unique camera has started: a revolution in DSLRs, and the huge importance it has for professionals who already adopted it (along with lot of expensive full frame lenses) for serious videography and filmmaking jobs.

INFORMATION & TESTIMONIALS

See by yourself, this is HUGE, you are NOT alone:

(*) Web in japanese, you can use online translators, although results might be not very clear. It was translated by japanese people and sent to us. This is only a paragraph:

“24fps and 60fps were made possible (on the 7D) not because of dual DIGIG 4, actually a single DIGIC 4 can handle 24fps and 60fps.”

CAN I HELP?

Absolutely! You CAN help. Community efforts DO bring results, like in the “Manual Control” request campaign.

Just check “I Called Canon” and the links above to see the procedure, more information, some experiences and testimonials.

EVERY effort by every individual or group in the right way is VERY important and valuable, and will benefit all users. But remember that only online complains are not enough.

That’s the way this works.

Last update: March, 2010.

“The response we received to this survey was truly overwhelming and we really appreciate your interest in participating.

We are very sorry but we have reached our required number of respondents and have ended this particular survey earlier than anticipated.”

UPDATE #1: Breaking news: CANON SURVEY

Along with calling Canon, and obviously due the high amount of customers calling Canon, this is a VERY GOOD chance to let them know how much you are interested in this regard and tell them your improvements request for the 5D Mark II.

– OFFICIAL Canon Survey – EOS Video related:

CUSTOMERS IN REAL ACTION

A Community of Photographers, Videographers and Filmmakers interested on improvements for video and other features in the 5D Mark II are taking a simple but still effective action.

We are doing what many Canon representatives told to be the best way: we are calling Canon and asking to enter a “feature request” for the 5D Mark II. This is the best way to be sure it will reach higher departments.

You can join this very simple effort doing the same. It only takes 5 minutes to politely ask to register a feature request for your 5DMkII. LOT of people already called, you won’t be the first, sorry about that 😉

– Any doubt about it?: Please take a look at the comments pasted below, the answers given by Canon (you might be VERY surprised!!) and the links at the bottom of this post too. This IS HAPPENING and you can add your “2 cents”.

Acting as Community we will get results sooner or later. It was a key factor to get Manual Control on June, and now this will benefit everyone too.

Call Canon and ask to register your Features Request:

CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCES & TESTIMONIALS

Just few! Including all comments in this post would be completely annoying.

Write your own experience in the comment field!.

1 — “ I just called and spoke with a very friendly representative, and he said that calling in and registering this as a feature request with Canon was a great idea and it’s how manual control got in there.

So please, if you have a 5DmkII, take the five minutes and call in, it CAN make a difference. ”

2 — “ Just called – it was easy. I got a nice guy on the phone who let me know that they’ve had “quite a few” 5D Mark II owners calling up. He also said he was happy to take the call because he owns the camera, too, and would like to see a firmware update.

I asked what the chances were, and he said something to the effect that Canon hadn’t “made any announcements yet.”

That sounded especially promising. Make your call now, if you haven’t already done so.”

3 — ” I called. Very easy. Everyone else should do the same. The Canon rep asked for my name, address, email, and the serial number of my 5D. I inquired about 24p and other frame rates for the 5D. He mentioned the calls and customer complaints about the lack of manual control and the eventual firmware upgrade canon released. I would hope his mentioning of this would suggest a similar scenario for 24p.”

4 — ” I just did it too. I very politely told the lady who answered that “You may have heard this before but I heard about your new 7D and I want my 5D Mark 2 to support the same features as the cheaper camera…” and proceeded to POLITELY tell her all of the things we in this community have been looking for.

Her response was basically “Thank you for the input. I have heard this before many times. We really need this kind of input. It’s input like this from our customers that directly led to the release of the manual video settings firmware release.”

She further explained how each phone call we receive about it gets forwarded to management, a tech case is opened, etc. My conclusion is that they are listening and what we most need to do is make sure they hear us.

So everyone PLEASE follow suit and VERY POLITELY call, not email. A phone call shows much more sincerity on your part vs. an email that can be discarded in 2 seconds. I talked with customer support for 5 minutes while she jotted down our conversation to be put in the tech case.

It was VERY clear that the phone is ringing off the hook about this issue. What we want is for the tech support people to keep hearing our story. We want them to spend 30 minutes of every 60 minutes hearing how much better our lives would be if our beloved 5D had better video mode support and manual audio gain.

It’s like democracy folks. If you don’t vote, you have no case to complain. Let’s really let them know that dozens/hundreds/thousands of their owners really feel that these features are essential to their 5D.

The number is (800) 828-4040. And please don’t whine that “It won’t help”. Ultimately it could prove futile, but there is absolutely no downside to calling Canon and letting them know how much we are countng on their support. ”

5 — I called Canon again today and chose General Product Support instead of Tech Support. I stated that I was calling “to make a product feature request for my 5D Mark II”, and right away the support rep said that he was writing them down to send up to Canon. So again I gave him the things I wanted to see improved or added, and he agreed with everything, saying that they have heard them a number of times.

He was way more receptive than the gentleman yesterday. After I had finished, he said he was entering my requests into a “Customer Voice” request form that would be sent up the line and read by someone higher up.

So, it seems that a lot of people are calling in and making waves here. Someone is listening, and I am betting that a change(s) will be made in the near future.”

ANY DOUBTS?

To see what is going on, please check Cinema5D forum thread and 5Dmk2 blog.

This is happening, this is REAL.

Your call is IMPORTANT. This is the RIGHT and BEST TIME to call Canon.

The more customers calling Canon and politely requesting, the more chances we ALL have.

As many Canon representatives already told: “this is the BEST way to be sure that the requests reach higher departments.”

Feel free to pass and spread this information.

We hope Canon consider all these features VERY seriously to be implemented via Firmware update, because they are possible on THIS CAMERA and they are VERY important for professionals and serious amateurs (Nikon could do it before indeed…)
