EOS 7D Firmware 1.2.5 Coming Soon

UPDATE: April 24, 2011 – Download still available –

As mentioned in our previous article, Canon UK removed the links to the new firmware version 1.2.5 for EOS 7D. But we realized that in fact the files are still on the server.

So, if you really need the update and don’t want to wait until Canon officially release, you can still download it (if Canon doesn’t change the file location or completely removes it).

To know about the improvements and fixes incorporated in this update, please check this article. Below we post the current links to Canon server.

DISCLAIMER: You should know what you are doing and all the precautions that must be taken when updating your camera’s firmware (doing it with a fully charged Canon brand battery, not touching anything during the process, etc.). If you’re uncertain about it, please wait until the official announcement and release. We are not responsible of any kind of damage or loss of information due to any reason. We only provide the information we found.

_______________________________________________________

As mentioned on previous articles, firmware version 1.2.5 for Canon EOS 7D was available at Canon UK website and then removed 1 day after we announced it.

According to our friends at Planet5D firmware version 1.2.5 will be released soon:

Just in from canon:

There are no safety issues with 7D firmware including version 1.2.5. The Canon UK web site posted it before they were supposed to, but it will be reposted worldwide within the next few days.

So it seems it was some kind of leak, nothing else. Weird anyway!

Stay tuned!

EOS 7D Firmware 1.2.5 REMOVED

Today Canon UK has removed firmware version 1.2.5 for the EOS 7D from their website.

Yesterday we wrote an article about this new release available for download. Pretty weird it was only available at Canon UK. But even more strange that it was removed less than 1 day after we posted about it!

As we mentioned earlier, there was another weird thing: version 1.2.5 referred to a previous version (1.2.4) that was not widely (if officially) released.

We wonder… was a bug found on it?

Did Canon change their mind and are willing to add new features like disabling AGC to give manual audio control? (very unlikely to happen even when it’s so easy, but we all hope so)

Still no answers. So far, the “new” firmware version 1.2.5 is not available anymore.

______________________

Canon has released a new firmware update for the EOS 7D . It includes some fixes and improvements, but there is still no option to disable AGC (auto gain control).

Weird indeed, this firmware refers to a previous version (1.2.4) that was not widely announced. Moreover, this new version 1.2.5 still doesn’t appear on Canon USA website at the time of writing this article.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

It’s indeed very nice to see that Canon is actively fixing all bugs being detected and reported. All customers appreciate a company that makes efforts to fix and improve their current products.

But… Guess what!? Yes, we keep on requesting Canon for improvements on EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D.

Why? Because they CAN be improved (a lot). Many improvements are even a “kid’s game”, other require more work.

There are LOT of Canon users and customers asking those improvements since long ago (in some cases even since 2 years ago). Do not believe us, just do a research on forums, blogs and websites.

As always we post a reminder link to the List of Fixes & Improvements. Please check it and spread it for the benefit of all Canon users.

Some of those ideas and request listed there (collected from many hundred of professional and serious amateurs around the world) were taken by Canon and implemented on later but MUCH cheaper cameras (Panasonic took many ideas too, more seriously than Canon and did even a better job in their implementation).

If you want to get deeper and know more about the potential of Canon cameras that is not officially exploited by the manufacturer, please check The Hidden Potential of 5D Mark II and Magic Lantern Firmware Wiki. Do an internet research too, you may get surprised.

GREAT PROMOTIONS ENDING SOON

By the way, if you plan to buy a new camera, lens and/or flash, keep in mind there is a GREAT PROMOTION ending soon. You can save hundred of dollars when buying those items. Click here for more details.

There is an additional $100 instant rebate promotion for EOS 60D and EOS 7D ending soon too!.

EOS 7D Firmware Update 1.2.3

CANON EOS 7D – FIRMWARE UPDATE 1.2.3

Today Canon has released a new firmware update for the Canon EOS 7D.

Firmware changes:

Firmware version 1.2.3 incorporates the following fixes.

  1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the settings of the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 revert to the default settings when both the camera and the ST-E2 are set to auto power off.
  2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Macro Ring Lite (MR-14EX, MT24-EX) and slave flashes do not sync while shooting wirelessly.

Firmware version 1.2.3 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.2.2. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.2.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Addition:
Note that cameras with the version 1.2.3 firmware (and also versions 1.2.0 through 1.2.2) cannot be downgraded to a previous firmware version (such as version 1.1.0 or earlier).

Important: Before downloading the firmware update, please be sure to read the entire contents of Canon’s page.

REMINDER TO CANON

This update is aimed to fix some issues, which is great and always very much appreciated for all Canon users, especially those ones suffering the issues.

But we can’t give up on asking Canon: why don’t they also IMPROVE some of the functions of their current expensive cameras?

This not only applies to Canon EOS 7D, but also to the rest even more expensive models like EOS 1D Mark IV and EOS 5D Mark II.

We don’t only want to see new cameras “replacing old” models (which in fact are not really “old”, that’s mainly a marketing crazy race) then “forcing” customers to buy new ones, but also firmware updates that give to the users and customers the HUGE potential these cameras ALREADY have inside.

We always like new cameras, of course, but we do not like the crippling that is applied to them, at all. Stop crippling cameras and “free” the current ones!. We are all customers and consumers, but not fools.

As a reminder we mention very few examples of features that CAN be improved on many current Canon DSLR cameras via Firmware Update (without hardware change):

  • “Clean” HDMI / AV output (function to enable/disable the white focus square in Live View mode. So easy to do)
  • Auto ISO Limiters, essential for M mode (in normal & Live View mode) (*)
  • Manual Audio gain control (*)
  • More frames available on Bracketing mode (for HDR photography)
  • Capability to “Edit” movie/video clip in camera (*)
  • Movie “Crop” mode (*)
  • etc.

(*) Notes: Some of these features are already available on specific models, while not in others sometimes much more expensive. Also, some of them are even available on P&S cameras under $500, but NOT in muti-thousand dollaras DSLR cameras!. This inconsistency and incoherence should be fixed by Canon.

Please check the article Zoom H4N – Firmware Update 1.70 (which indeed implements improvements) for more details, and also check the List of Fixes & Improvements to know more possible enhancements. It’s even smart from a business point of view (as commented on the previous link).

CUSTOMERS ASKING CANON

We have received LOT of messages from 5D Mark II and 7D users asking if there is a hope for such improvements. We couldn’t tell for sure. It all depends if Canon is willing to implement them or not (even when they actually CAN).

We sincerely hope Canon will “listent to customers” once again, and fix this inconsistency and incoherence, and improve the higher level DSLR cameras’ features to match the entry and mid-level ones.

Feel free to spread this link and support this “reminder” to Canon (of course, feel free to send it to Canon too using the contact information on the main page or your own personal way).
