CANON EOS 7D – FIRMWARE UPDATE 1.2.3
Today Canon has released a new firmware update for the Canon EOS 7D.
Firmware changes:
Firmware version 1.2.3 incorporates the following fixes.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the settings of the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2 revert to the default settings when both the camera and the ST-E2 are set to auto power off.
- Fixes a phenomenon in which the Macro Ring Lite (MR-14EX, MT24-EX) and slave flashes do not sync while shooting wirelessly.
Firmware version 1.2.3 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.2.2. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.2.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
Addition:
Note that cameras with the version 1.2.3 firmware (and also versions 1.2.0 through 1.2.2) cannot be downgraded to a previous firmware version (such as version 1.1.0 or earlier).

REMINDER TO CANON
This update is aimed to fix some issues, which is great and always very much appreciated for all Canon users, especially those ones suffering the issues.
But we can’t give up on asking Canon: why don’t they also IMPROVE some of the functions of their current expensive cameras?
This not only applies to Canon EOS 7D, but also to the rest even more expensive models like EOS 1D Mark IV and EOS 5D Mark II.
We don’t only want to see new cameras “replacing old” models (which in fact are not really “old”, that’s mainly a marketing crazy race) then “forcing” customers to buy new ones, but also firmware updates that give to the users and customers the HUGE potential these cameras ALREADY have inside.
We always like new cameras, of course, but we do not like the crippling that is applied to them, at all. Stop crippling cameras and “free” the current ones!. We are all customers and consumers, but not fools.
As a reminder we mention very few examples of features that CAN be improved on many current Canon DSLR cameras via Firmware Update (without hardware change):
- “Clean” HDMI / AV output (function to enable/disable the white focus square in Live View mode. So easy to do)
- Auto ISO Limiters, essential for M mode (in normal & Live View mode) (*)
- Manual Audio gain control (*)
- More frames available on Bracketing mode (for HDR photography)
- Capability to “Edit” movie/video clip in camera (*)
- Movie “Crop” mode (*)
- etc.
(*) Notes: Some of these features are already available on specific models, while not in others sometimes much more expensive. Also, some of them are even available on P&S cameras under $500, but NOT in muti-thousand dollaras DSLR cameras!. This inconsistency and incoherence should be fixed by Canon.

CUSTOMERS ASKING CANON
We have received LOT of messages from 5D Mark II and 7D users asking if there is a hope for such improvements. We couldn’t tell for sure. It all depends if Canon is willing to implement them or not (even when they actually CAN).
We sincerely hope Canon will “listent to customers” once again, and fix this inconsistency and incoherence, and improve the higher level DSLR cameras’ features to match the entry and mid-level ones.

Those campaigns were aimed to get Full Manual Control, which Canon released on June 2009 “by Popular Demand“. Later we worked for further improvements like Standard 24/25/30p modes, which Canon announced in October 2009 after a huge “Calling Canon” campaign, and released in March 2010: “Developed following feedback from photographers and cinematographers”
We keep on working, giving feedback on possible fixes and improvements, because the 5D Mark II still has HUGE potential inside, not fully exploited yet.
All these long processes, along other factors, have indeed benefited other models like 7D, 1D Mark IV and T2i/550D, which weren’t originally planned to have so rich movie features.

I completely agree with the “reminder”
I’m Canon customer since many years ago and I’m tired of manufacturers releasing new and crippled cameras like if they were disposable after a couple of years,instead of improving them and sell more, trying to force people to buy “the new” all the time in a crazy marketing strategy. As you said,they could improve current hdslrs and promote them more, then sell more with a minimum cost.
What are these companies thinking about? it seems marketing departments need a refresh…
Please Canon improve the 5D mark II and 7D, respect your customers!
The hardware is not the limitation!
It’s a shame to see some features available on a much cheaper DSLR like 60D or even T2i but not in a $2,500 body only like 5D mark II !!!
No 50/60p modes, no Auto Iso limiter, no video clip edit option, no video crop mode on the 5D Mark II… and an annoying white focus square in ALL cameras on HDMI an AV output!
Yes, 5D Mk II it’s great full frame camera but what is going on nowadays?
do you want me to buy a $1,000 instead of a $2,500 DSLR?
Who drives marketing there?
where is the hystogram in video mode on 7D? or manual audio control?
It’s SO ridiculous.. I had and still have many Canon P&S like G9, G11,etc, all purchased for under $500, with manual audio control, “edit” option to cut video clips, but I don’t have the so *BASIC* “edit” function on my 5D Mark II purchased at $2,700 (body only obviously)
WHAT IS THE LOGIC HERE?!
I can’t cut any part of my video clips on my 5D Mark 2, while I can do it in a snap on my G11… Not to mention the huge amount of memory space that 5D mark 2 eats on my card with each video clip, making it even more essential to have that basic function available to save space when there are unwanted parts on video clips.
ALL OTHER LESS EXPENSIVE DSLR CAMERAS LIKE 7D, 60D AND T2I HAVE THIS FUNCTION!!
ALL Canon P&S cameras have “digital zoom”, EOS 60D and T2i both have “video crop mode”… but much more expensive 5D mark ii and 7D do NOT. Again, what is the logic here??
I feel for those 7D owners who can’t set audio manually… ALL THIS MATTER IS UNBELIEVABLE INCOHERENCE FROM CANON AND CLEAR DEMONSTRATION OF CRIPPLED CAMERAS.
I hope Canon fix all cameras and features soon, including 5D mark II which is still almost $1,000 more expensive than 7D and much more than entry-level dslrs. This doesn’t happen on other brands.
Am a 7D, Xsi, Powershot SX10Is and a MiniDV palmcorder, all from canon, since a been a canon loyal for so many years and couldn’t agree more than you guys but to myself, and to say to canon hey where’s our real good things, we’ll missing alot here, even do canon has good products none have been on the edge of techonology…it seems they always trying to catch on with their counterparts … for so am so mad my 7D does not have Auto-ISO limiter and Audio Gain control which are to me more important than other stuff the camera have that I don’t use at all … best of all … like u said … 200 dollars P&S cameras already comes with them it ridiculizes the hight cost of DSLR’s … i seen p&s cameras taking beatifull not grainy jepgs it blows my 7D on picture quality !
