FIRMWARE 2.0.4 RELEASED

Special Thanks to Canon Firmware Team for this great update and for fixing the previous reported problem very fast.

Download Firmware 2.0.4 from here:

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dmk2/firmware.html

PLEASE: Follow carefully all instructions to update your camera. Do not touch anything during the process.

CONSIDERATIONS

As we reported in our previous post, we collected few other possible issues that were supposed to be malfunctions of update 2.0.3. But after some deep tests everything seems to work fine.

We will keep checking and reporting on them or any other possible issue. We are welcome to receive any comment regarding issues that users might find.

As we said, this is a really great update, although more professional on video and cinematography should have been given with beta versions to test deeper and detect issues faster, and even make some suggestions.

SUPPORT

If you think all our efforts and campaigns to help to brig these updates for improvements to ALL users since beginning of 2009 (1st for Full Manual Control, later for STANDARD 23.976/25/29.97fps modes) and some further ones deserve some support, please consider supporting us.

You can read a brief history of the whole process here, here, here and here.

The whole story would be very long to tell, and even include some aspects not publicly known, so we won’t bore you.

We will keep watching closely to check if further improvements are possible to achieve. Few of the most requested ones are 720p50/60 mode and Full HD output through HDMI. So stay tuned, this might continue.

No matter the amount, your help will be very much appreciated and valuable.

We really need your support. Thank you very much in advance.

UPDATE

Canon has updated the download page of Firmware 2.0.3

You can read the original Canon statement here.

A copy of the updated text is below:

EOS 5D Mark II Firmware Update Version 2.0.3

Recently we have discovered a malfunction that occurs with Firmware Version 2.0.3, in which the manual recording levels for C1/C2/C3 are changed and the camera becomes unable to record audio if the power is turned off (or if Auto power off takes effect) after registering “Sound Recording: Manual” in the camera user settings.

We apologize very sincerely for the inconvenience, but we are going to stop making this firmware available for download. For customers who have already updated to the new firmware, when using the camera with the mode dial set to C1/C2/C3, please either set the sound recording settings to Auto.

We are currently preparing firmware that will correct this malfunction. As soon as those preparations have been completed, we will let you know on this Web site. In the meantime, we apologize for the inconvenience this represents, but please wait until the fixed firmware is ready.

________________________

We really thank Canon for taking fast actions on this regard, and also those active users who took the initiative to share and report it immediately.

ADDITIONAL ISSUES

This is our remaining big concern: Are there any additional issues?

We are receiving reports that seem to indicate that possibility. Some of them:

– Weird noises coming from the lens and/or Aperture changes in M mode while not in LIveView mode, without the user doing any change. Even using different lenses.

Could it be another kind of malfunction in the connection between camera and lens? In fact it is one of the functions that was also recoded.

– Inconsistent stuttering and/or dropped frames on 24p (in some cases or cameras)

– Are black dots appearing again? One reader has posted a comment with a video test.

If you experience any of these or other malfunction: please REPORT it to Canon soon. You can also post it here (but report it to Canon).

Contact Canon: Information is here.

Canon Official Update Information

  • Introduction

.

INTRODUCTION

As reported before, the new Firmware 2.0.3 has some bugs/issues, especially related to the new Audio functionality.

Some active users have reported that to Canon (thanks to all of them).

And Canon got aware of it.

CANON ANNOUNCEMENT

Important Update Information for
Firmware Update Version 2.0.3

” Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera are experiencing issues with Firmware Update Version 2.0.3.

We are working on a new firmware update to address these phenomena, which will be available soon. If you have not registered your EOS 5D Mark II, please register so we will be able to notify you via email when future firmware updates become available for download.

Canon always strives to provide the highest quality products to our customers. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these phenomena may have caused. We appreciate your kind patronage and support.”

ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS

THANKS CANON for the announcement and your commitment to give the best possible to your customers. We appreciate your efforts. All you are doing will reflect in a long term company profit.

This would be a good opportunity to get even some minor additional improvements, like:

– Option to have histogram overlay whilst actually recording
– Have audio meters showing whilst recording
– Easier/quicker way to change audio levels
– AutoISO limits (which is in our List of Fixes & Request since early 2009)
– Crop Video mode? (which is in our List of Fixes & Request since several months ago)
– Cleaner HDMI output, and at Full HD while recording if possible? (also in the list)

Of course, the most important is to fix every possible current issue

Custom Modes are essential for thousands of users.

Bugs / Issues on Firmware 2.0.3

BUG / ISSUE

The firmware 2.0.3 is in fact a great update and has been very long awaited by thousands of customers, as it was demonstrated by the high overload that Canon servers suffered few hours after it was announced to be available for download.

But a day after its release, there are lot of reports telling an issue related to the new Audio functionality not being registered properly in Custom modes.

Below are few of those reports:

“No audio in C modes unless I set my audio levels in one of the “creative” modes (M, Av, Tv, ) first and then go into my C mode of choice. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a C mode if I have to go to another mode first…”

“I have found the same thing. It only seems to work if you move from one of the other creative modes to a Custom mode. If you turn the camera OFF, then go to a Custom mode, turn the camera back ON, and then try to record Manual audio, you will get signal levels on your meters, but no audio is recorded.”

etc…

CONSIDERATIONS

Probably if video/movie professionals had been given the firmware to test months ago, this bug would have been picked-up and other very easy features could have been suggested for inclusion:

– Option to have histogram overlay whilst actually recording
– Have audio meters showing whilst recording
– Easier/quicker way to change audio levels

We really hope Canon solve it soon. And also add some of the above suggestions too, why not? They are completely possible, just like AutoISO limits.

But the most important now is to fix this problem.

We encourage all customers to report this bug/issue to Canon.

It has to be fixed because custom modes are VERY important and even essential for professionals who use the 5D Mark II on a daily basis.

Just imagine you make all your settings and register them in a Custom mode, like most users and professionals usually do. Then after turning ON the camera you select your Cx mode and start filming, but after you finish your work you notice there is no audio on the footage! It is not normal.

Report this problem. We all need it fixed.

FIRMWARE 2.0.3

After so many requests along 2009 and so many delays, the new and so expected firmware version 2.0.3 for the 5D Mark II is finally available for public download.

Download from here:

http://web.canon.jp/imaging/eosd/firm-e/eos5dmk2/firmware.html

Please: read and follow the instructions carefully.

FIRMWARE CHANGES

Firmware Version 2.0.3 incorporates five enhancements to the movie function and a fix to the manual sensor cleaning function of the EOS 5D Mark II camera.

1. Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.

NTSC:

1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)

PAL:

1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)

2. Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).

3. Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.

4. Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.

5. Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.

6. Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

Firmware Version 2.0.3 is for cameras with firmware up to version 1.2.4. If the camera’s firmware is already version 2.0.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Movies captured using EOS 5D Mark II cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.0 to 1.2.4 can be played back on cameras updated with Firmware Version 2.0.3. However, if you try to play back movies captured with a camera with the new firmare on a camera with a previous firmare version, a message, Cannot play back image, appears on the camera’s LCD monitor.

Read more on Canon website.

HISTORY

If you want to know a brief history of some unofficial aspects that helped to this firmware release, please check our previous post: 5D Mark II Firmware 2.0.3 Announcement

That will give you an extra perspective, not officially nor widely known. There are still many things that remain behind curtains…

We still also keep our List of Fixes & Improvements.

Some features of the list are  included in this new firmware release (other are in the T2i/550D !) and others might come in future.

Time (and some other factors) will tell…

BRIEF HISTORY

This has been a long road indeed… with huge amount of time spent on spreading information to the public, phone calls, emails, private conversations with Canon and lot more. We did our best, and learned a lot in the path.

Now we will finally get the so much expected (and delayed) firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark II for ALL users, and not only for few “lucky” ones.

Full Manual Control was just our first goal. Now the standard 24/25/30 frame rates, and other highly requested improvements will also be available to ALL users of the first DSLR in the world with Full HD capabilities. The List of possible Fixes & Improvements was and is still long though.

There are many factors that make influence on a company’s decision, and the huge amount of customers requesting to Canon all around the world through our campaigns, and by their own ways, clearly made a change (as many Canon representatives already told).

MANY times we heard words like “No, Canon will not update the 5D Mark II”, even by renowned people. You probably heard them too, but we did not give up because we did know it was possible to do, and we were firm in our purpose.

That people telling those words didn’t understand nor realize how a HUGE amount of customers showing so big interest on many possible improvements could make influence on the company’s decisions. It’s all about business, of course we know that, so we all “showed” Canon that improving the 5D Mark II is a good business due lot of reasons.

We won’t bore you with more details. You can find more information and testimonials in previous posts.

THANKS

We know this Firmware could’ve been released MUCH earlier to customers, and we know it could include more improvements too (720p50 and 720p60 modes have been removed from the “official” release). Canon has been doing changes lately…

But it’s finally here, so we say THANKS CANON for these great improvements.

We send big and special thanks to all those people who joined forces to contact Canon in all possible ways, to spread all our campaigns and efforts to let Canon know what we all want and need.

All those people who participated in our “Calling Canon” Campaign, were very important, and made a clear impact which reflected in Canon’s announcement few weeks later, in October 20th, 2009. As we said many times: Community actions do bring results.

DOWNLOAD LINK

It’s not available for download yet, although as we already reported in our previous post it’s available at several Canon Tech Service Centers since firsts weeks of February.

Soon it will be time to update the 5D Mark II with the official firmware and take more advantage of its huge potential.

Canon stated: ” The firmware will be available to download from mid-March from the Canon website http://www.canon.com/eos-d/

Expect it to be available since March 16th.

PLEASE: When updating remember to carefully follow the instructions. Do it with a fully charged battery, and do not remove it, do nor open the battery door nor memory card door during the process.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

We all made history, so enjoy it!

If you think all our efforts made since beginning of 2009 deserve some support, please consider making a donation.

In case you would like to help, no matter the amount, please click here:

We REALLY need your support and it will be VERY much appreciated!

Thanks a lot in advance.
