New Name & New Website!

New Name & New Website!

More than two years ago, we started the “5D Mark II Team” blog with the purpose of helping and supporting all possible campaigns to encourage all Canon users to request improvements for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II via firmware update (especially “full manual control”, and later “standard 24/25/30p modes”). We even posted, long ago, a List of Fixes & Improvements that includes lot of possible enhancement for the current and future cameras.

Through this period of time we experienced many different situations and learned lot of things. Also met very nice people from other places (sometimes very far) and websites.

Since some months ago we felt the real need to expand our site and also rename it. Not only due to the upcoming new 5D Mark III, but also and more important because we don’t focus only on the 5D Mark II anymore.

We love the Canon EOS 5D Mark II indeed, which is still one of the best HDSLR cameras, but we like and want to share useful information regarding other models, even made by other manufacturers, as well as other technical topics.

So we decided to do all changes at once. That implied new name, new Twitter/Vimeo/YouTube IDs and a self hosted new website (and lot of work!).

Special thanks

We want to give very special thanks to our friends at Planet5D for all the tips and advices they gave us on this process. They keep an amazing job on their website, and they are also really great people! We highly recommend visiting their huge website.

New categories and site layout

We reorganized the content, and changed the layout of our site, making it more user friendly to improve the experience of our readers.

There are lot of work to do yet. Please accept our apologizes for some pending sections and site corrections. We are working hard on them and they will be implemented soon.

New Social Networks IDs & Site Subscriptions

If you are currently following on Twitter, don’t worry, you don’t need to do anything. We already renamed the ID keeping all followers. The same applies to Vimeo.

We strongly suggest our readers to subscribe to our new site to receive updates when new articles are published. All previous subscription to the old blog will not work anymore.

We launched a Facebook page and new Youtube channel. Expect new content there very soon!

Subscribe to any of our social networks pages using the buttons at the right side of the new website.

Well, the new site is now online! We really hope you enjoy it!

Best regards,

HD Cam Team

But today Elcomsoft has also claimed to find a vulnerability in Nikon authentication system:

EOS 7D Firmware 1.2.5 Coming Soon

UPDATE: April 24, 2011 – Download still available –

As mentioned in our previous article, Canon UK removed the links to the new firmware version 1.2.5 for EOS 7D. But we realized that in fact the files are still on the server.

So, if you really need the update and don’t want to wait until Canon officially release, you can still download it (if Canon doesn’t change the file location or completely removes it).

To know about the improvements and fixes incorporated in this update, please check this article. Below we post the current links to Canon server.

DISCLAIMER: You should know what you are doing and all the precautions that must be taken when updating your camera’s firmware (doing it with a fully charged Canon brand battery, not touching anything during the process, etc.). If you’re uncertain about it, please wait until the official announcement and release. We are not responsible of any kind of damage or loss of information due to any reason. We only provide the information we found.

General instructions: Firmware Update Procedures (English)

Software (for Windows):

Downloads: eos7d-v125.exe

Software (for Mac OS X):

File version: 1.2.5
File Size: 13.7 MB
Downloads: eos7d-v125.dmg

As mentioned on previous articles, firmware version 1.2.5 for Canon EOS 7D was available at Canon UK website and then removed 1 day after we announced it.

According to our friends at Planet5D firmware version 1.2.5 will be released soon:

Just in from canon:

There are no safety issues with 7D firmware including version 1.2.5. The Canon UK web site posted it before they were supposed to, but it will be reposted worldwide within the next few days.

So it seems it was some kind of leak, nothing else. Weird anyway!

Stay tuned!

EOS 7D Firmware 1.2.5 REMOVED

Today Canon UK has removed firmware version 1.2.5 for the EOS 7D from their website.

Yesterday we wrote an article about this new release available for download. Pretty weird it was only available at Canon UK. But even more strange that it was removed less than 1 day after we posted about it!

As we mentioned earlier, there was another weird thing: version 1.2.5 referred to a previous version (1.2.4) that was not widely (if officially) released.

We wonder… was a bug found on it?

Did Canon change their mind and are willing to add new features like disabling AGC to give manual audio control? (very unlikely to happen even when it’s so easy, but we all hope so)

Still no answers. So far, the “new” firmware version 1.2.5 is not available anymore.

EOS 7D Firmware Update 1.2.5

UPDATE: April 20, 2011 – Firmware version 1.2.5 for EOS 7D was removed from Canon UK. Check this article to know more.

Canon has released a new firmware update for the EOS 7D . It includes some fixes and improvements, but there is still no option to disable AGC (auto gain control).

Weird indeed, this firmware refers to a previous version (1.2.4) that was not widely announced. Moreover, this new version 1.2.5 still doesn’t appear on Canon USA website at the time of writing this article.

NAB SHOW 2011 – Some Comments

NAB Show 2011 has ended few days ago, and we couldn’t let it go without sharing some comments and thoughts.

One of the most relevant considerations for the convergence trend and the HDSLR market is to remind that NAB was mainly (and mostly) aimed to broadcasting equipment. In fact NAB means “National Association of Broadcasters”, so NAB Show was all about that.

At least it was until the appearance of Canon EOS 5D Mark II and all subsequent cameras with Full HD movie/video capturing capabilities.

That’s not a minor point, but a very big one. If you had the chance to visit NAB Show few years ago, and also this latest 2011 show, you know what we mean.

In this 2011 version, there were LOT of new products clearly aimed for HDSLR cameras, more than ever.

There is no doubt that the Canon 5D Mark II was a “game changer”, even without Canon’ specific intentionality (in fact they were surprised and didn’t expect that success, it took them many months, with huge amount of firmware improvements requests in between (1) to realize the potential of this new growing market).

Since then, everything has changed to most major DSLR cameras manufacturers.

Note (1): Just to mention few of those worldwide campaigns and requests: Petition to Canon Inc., “Calling Canon” Campaign , List of Fixes & Improvements, and thousands of Canon customers and users requesting by their own or by many other ways.

Below we list a couple of our friends who have covered this event and can give you lot more of VERY interesting information of new technologies and products at NAB Show 2011. We highly recommend checking their websites:

You can find lot of additional information at many other sites, and of course you can visit NABShow website as well.
